 Greetings, Fellow Haunters:

I don’t have the first idea how many haunters attended last weekend’s Midwest Haunters Convention in Columbus, Ohio. I’m not even sure the attendance actually grew from 2007. What made judging the crowd difficult for me was that, for the first time, the show took place in a true convention hall.
For comparison’s sake: when the convention was last held in downtown Columbus (2006), the vendor area was a 7200-square-foot hotel ballroom. This year the vendors, auction areas, a relaxation area for attendees and a 30' x 30' inflatable haunt were all placed in the 100,000+ square foot structure that is called Hall E - F on the convention center’s map. All this haunt activity I’ve mentioned took up barely a third of this large hall. But stand back and think about the remarkable difference in size: 7200 square feet versus 35,000, or something like that, in just two years. We in Ohio are so thrilled that you have approved of the type of haunt convention we put on.
The aisleways in the vendor area were wide; at least 10 feet. Upon looking at the photographs I took, they might have even been 12 feet wide. Now you know why judging the crowd was something I could not wrap my arms around this year. Plenty of happy people came through the hall’s eight entrance doors, but they were spread out in a much larger space than ever before.
I had a relaxing time at MHC, and I hope the same was true for you.

-------

I walked in to the hotel’s bar at around 9:30 on Thursday evening. There were only a handful of haunters there, sipping drinks and quietly relieved to find themselves in the company of other haunters. The long bus tour to the Cincinnati area that day was not due back for a few more hours. So I sat for a while and chatted a few people up. Despite the obstacles, I drove to my brother’s house in Bexley not long afterward.
The obstacles I referred to were the many dead traffic lights in downtown Columbus, and a complete blackout in some suburbs. Bexley was one of them. As I creeped along the near-black streets, I would see only a candle or two in the windows of each of the houses I passed by. The same was true of my brother’s house. I found the three members of his family playing cards around the dining room table by the light of a single candle. A huge thunderstorm had bullied its way through the central part of the city around 6:30 that evening. As a testament to its strength, the storm made the front page of Saturday morning’s "Dispatch."

-------

Friday was a day filled with contrasting events. In the morning I was a certified gopher for whatever vendor needed some muscle. I lugged in batches of steel shelving for one vendor and then hauled in dollies of boxed goods for two other vendors. At the far rear of the hall were loading docks for 6 trucks. There was also a drive-up area for small trucks that pulled a rental trailer. This area was a real circus on Saturday morning.
We (meaning the MHC work crew) were supposed to get possession of the exhibit hall at 10 AM. I arrived at 9:30 just to make sure I was there on time. But we didn’t get into high gear until around 10:30 that morning. As soon as we all got the green light, people started setting up their booths like crazy.
Under candlelight the previous evening, my high-school nephew Sean Hamilton had asked me to take him to the convention center Friday morning so he could help, too. Sean and I did a fair amount of manual labor together early in the morning. At some point I told him "I’m going to visit the vendors who have already set up their booths and see if they need any special help."
Later, I learned that Sean had glommed on to a new vendor at this year’s show, a company called Sophisticated Terror out of Kansas. The fellow who ran the booth is Kale Hamel, and his big prop was a replica of an Easter Island stone god. Later, Sean told me that he had fun helping them set up their booth. The people from Sophisticated Terror told me the same thing, only in appreciative reverse.
Sean seems to be following in his Uncle Rex’s footsteps. I was a theater rat for nearly a decade before I first became involved in haunted attractions. My nephew seems to be attracted to the physical side of the illusion business, just as I was at his age.
After taking Sean home in the early afternoon, I met up with my Scab 5 comrades in the convention center as they arrived from Cleveland. Due to time constraints, we did not have a chance to check out the Bar Of Modern Art (BOMA) location where we would perform that evening. Instead we had a hurried early dinner at the hotel’s food court. Then we five were off to room 638 in the hotel, where the other four had arranged to bunk together that evening.
We were all business in that room that Friday evening as we made ourselves look horrid and strapped on evil-looking costumes. Not long after we began our work, the skies turned ugly shades of gray and a big thunderstorm cluster marched straight towards our western-facing window. The storm hit in the early evening. Strong rainstorms lashed our windows and the cars far down below us. Vehicles creeped along the monsoon streets; traffic signals were blown to and fro; the few pedestrians we saw were at the mercy of the elements.
When the five of us uglies arrived at BOMA at around 7:30 PM, the weather had finally relented. The joint was starting to get warmed up. The night club is housed in an old Baptist church, built of sturdy brick. It has seven different bars in it, plenty of hand-carved wood, stained-glass windows and more than a few elegant staircases to take you and up and down its levels. Plastered all about the walls are the fine art pieces that give the club its claim to fame. BOMA is one of the classiest bars I’ve ever set foot in.
Just after 8:30 PM, we scabs were on the job of visually entertaining the patrons as Robert "Fingers" Frankenberg played his entire CD entitled "Symphonic Sacrifices." True to his nickname, Rob played for at least an hour and I didn’t hear him miss a thing. The venue was a joy to creep around in, dressed in my "Industrial Zargon" getup. (I haven’t worn that costume for many years. It looks great, but what a pain to wear.) Afterwards, many attendees told me how much they enjoyed our part in MHC’s Friday night Club Vampire affair.
I hung around till just past midnight. Plenty of people visited BOMA that evening - convention attendees and local horror fans, alike. As the evening progressed, high-energy horror rap groups took to the indoor stage, much to the crowd’s delight. At the substantial, outdoor cocktail patio, various groups of patrons enjoyed the soft breezes, pleasant temperatures and haunted camaraderie.

-------

My other official task was to be the convention’s "Official Ambassador" (that’s what my name badge sported) on Saturday morning at the entrance to the vendor area. The show did not open to the public until 9 AM, but I was there at 7:30 rarin’ to go. Already, there was a small crowd around the registration booth. There was a small coffee vendor right outside the doors, selling specialty blends. On the other side of the registration desks was a larger booth that sold smoothies, fruit and bakery. These two kiosks added to the free continental breakfast that the producers had provided for early attendees; coffee, decaf, hot water, tea bags, fruit and a nice assortment of baked goods. This free meal was placed right in front of the registration desks.
I sat on the door from 8:30 till 9, letting in those who I knew were vendors and politely keeping out those who did not belong. Right at 9, Kathy Schieferstein suddenly asked me to be the proctor for a group of classrooms right around the corner from the main doors. For the next 15 minutes I watched over these three classrooms (whose sessions weren’t scheduled to begin until 9:30) and got to meet the instructors. These classes were for those interested in the Midwest Fantasy Show. At 9:15 the young lady who volunteered to be the proctor arrived, relieving me of my temporary duty. She told me that she thought her call time was 9:30, not 9 A.M.
The four MHC producers split up the overall show duties this way: Kathy Schieferstein is the goddess of the registration desks. She oversees all the stuff about name badges and signing up for classes and are we registered for the costume ball and where can we get something to eat and all sorts of other administrative baloney. Her husband, Barry, is the grand poobah of the vendor area. He signs up vendors, takes care of their special needs, lays out the vendor floor and makes sure everyone who spends good money at MHC has his/her voice heard. Neena Collins takes the Midwest Fantasy Show under her wing. She rounds up the body-art artists and models, puts together the repertoire of classes and a whole lot of other seemingly-little things. Kelly Collins is the event guy. He runs the big party stuff: the all-day Thursday haunt tour, the Friday-night bus tour, the costume ball on Saturday night and the auctions on Sunday morning. Watching them closely, as I have over the years, I don’t know how they could put on anything more complex than they already have.
For the rest of Saturday morning I was doing my normal thing, making attendees feel welcome to both the MHC and the great haunting state of Ohio. I met folks from as far away as Rhode Island, Utah and California. Since those who wish to attend MHC’s vendor room do not have to register nor must they have a name badge, there were quite a number of unknown people who walked by me into the vendor room that sunny morning.
My Scab Five comrades and I met for lunch at the food court on Saturday. Some of them had already taught classes that morning. Others, were due to lead their sessions that afternoon. We talked about what we experienced the night before at Club Vampire, what the day on Saturday had been like so far and what the future holds for us all.
There are so many more items I could tell you about. Here are but a few:
When I arrived at the hotel on Thursday evening, I was wearing a Rotting Flesh Radio t-shirt. Who else should join me on the ride up the elevator but Jonathan himself.
The Monster Make-up War was different because the time period was chopped down to 30 minutes instead of the normal one hour. Next year, the models and audience should be switched 180 degrees so that the sunlight falls upon the models’ faces.
Rich Hanf was the person who made the Frankenberg/Scab 5 event take place.
The 2007 Lord Zargon t-shirt that I donated to Haunters for Hooters fetched 15 bucks. Its real value was around $30. Big deal. Even I haven’t found a way yet to put the victims of breast cancer into dollar terms.
My spies tell me that there were about twice as many vendors at MHC as attended TransWorld in Las Vegas this past March. What an interesting statistic.
I helped Ed Edmunds of Distortions unpack his crate on Friday morning. It was he alone and a single, large plywood crate at MHC in 2008. But I took careful note that his company, the best-known prop vendor we have, decided that 2008 was the year to begin exhibiting at Midwest Haunters Convention. For me, it was a special moment.
Thank you all, members of the haunt universe, for making my visit to MHC in 2008 a time-slice to remember.

Very truly yours,

Rex B. Hamilton

Ghoulies, ghosties and long-legged beasties from all across the world gathered at the Sands Convention and Expo Center on March 17th, 2008, to attend the first annual International Association of Haunted Attractions Awards Ceremony and Banquet. Dubbed the "Oscares", this spooktacular event honors individuals from the Haunted Attraction industry for their outstanding contribution and dedication to the art of haunting.

"The International Association of Haunted Attractions (IAHA) is THE professional affiliation for haunted house owners and operators." said Tim Gavinski, President of IAHA. "In the past, there has only been one top ten haunted house type list that came out of our industry but that came from a magazine publisher who always made sure to include his own haunted houses on the list. The International Association of Haunted Attractions Awards Ceremony and Banquet is much more democratic. The nominations and voting is done by our general membership made up literally hundreds and hundreds of haunted attraction owners from all over the world - everyone from the local neighborhood haunted house to the world famous Knott's Berry Farm Halloween Haunt. Like the Academy Awards, our general membership decides who we should honor as a positive example for the rest of the Haunted Attraction community."

For 2008, IAHA Vendor Excellence Awards went to Creative Visions, Gore Galore, Distortions Unlimited, Haunted Media DVD Magazine and Oak Island Entertainment Group. The Best New Product Award went to Spookywoods FX. Ben Armstrong of Netherworld Haunted House, Bob Turner of The Haunted Hydro, Randy Bates of The Bates Motel, and Lance Pope (posthumously) of Thrillvania were all honor with the IAHA Board of Director's Award. The President's Award went to Barry and Kathy Schieferstein and Kelly and Neena Collins, creators of the Midwest Haunter's Convention, and The International Association of Haunted Attractions Lifetime Achievement Award went to Industry legend Philip Morris of Morris Costumes.

In the United States, Halloween has become a 7 billion dollar industry and about 20% of all Americans will attend a Halloween event this fall.

HAuNTcon 2008 Update!

The 5th Annual Haunted Attraction National Tradeshow and Convention, (better known as HAuNTcon) moves this year to the Houston Crown Plaza Hotel, April 24-28, 2008, with a pre-show Haunt Tour “road trip” April 22- 24. Designed by Haunters, for Haunters, HAuNTcon is a convention and expo that packs every waking moment (maximum 24 hours per day) with everything a Haunter could possibly want or need to make the next Halloween season the best it can be!

Open to all Haunters at every age and level of experience. The 2008 extravaganza will be sponsored by FREEK Energy Drink, Wristband Resource and Haunted Attraction Magazine. HAuNTcon brings together people who love Haunted Houses and Halloween for a fun filled four days and nights of Haunter Education, Tours of Local Haunted Houses, jam packed Tradeshow Floor, Hearse Rally, Haunted Garage Sale and an incredible Costume Ball!

“Haunters are the best people on earth,” explains Leonard Pickel, editor of Haunted Attraction Magazine, who created HAuNTcon to be an opportunity for Haunters to network, share tips and stories, get fresh ideas, learn new ways to do what they do and check out the latest in Haunting props. “I have often said that Haunters are all siblings separated at birth, and HAuNTcon is just our massive family reunion!”

Haunt Tours
HAuNTcon 2008 opens one day earlier than in previous years, with a two night pre show trip to tour Haunted Attractions in Louisiana. The first stop is The 13th Gate Haunted House on Tuesday April 22 in Baton Rouge. Owned and operated by Dwayne Sanburn, The 13th Gate is one of the most detailed Haunts you will ever see. “I have been to some of the best detailed Haunts in the country,” explains Leonard. “Rocky Point, Netherworld, Verdun Manor, but The 13th Gate is an over the top experience.” The queue line space is themed as a barrel-vaulted underground maintenance area. There is even an old work bench with antique tools, placed as if someone had just set them down. “The attraction has Disney level detail and set design,” describes Leonard. “With a built-in effect designed to scare the 100 unsuspecting souls waiting in line for the Haunt to start!” Bring your cameras, for the Lights-on tour that will take place on Wednesday morning.

Next on the tour is a trip to Myrtles Plantation, know as one of the most Haunted places in the US. If you have ever thought of using a plantation theme for your Haunt, this is a great way to see the real thing, up close. Visitors will tour the plantation and house. We will attempt to conjure up real spirits before heading to New Orleans, one of the most Haunted cities in the United States.

Now in its third year of operation, Chamber of Horrors is the next Haunt on the tour. Creative scares and great detail will be the highlight of this backstage tour. Our hosts, Gaston Dupuy and Eddie Dupuy will be on hand to answer questions and show attends around the attraction.

The most radical Haunt on the pre-show tour will be The House of Shock. Closed after Hurricane Katrina, this in your face experience has been rebuilt in a new location that allowed a total redesign for the infamous attraction. “When I began Haunting, I turned away from all things Satanic.” recalls Leonard. “Still I was accused of ‘doing the devil’s work,’ just because I owned a Haunted House.” The House Of Shock, takes an opposite approach and embraces the “dark side” of Haunting. Owners Ross Karpleman and Steve Joseph, took this public attitude as a challenge, and themed their Haunt as a fight between good and evil, where good wasn’t always so good and evil always won! “One great thing about the new House of Shock is that the theme of the attraction is New Orleans,” relates Leonard. “The Haunt starts out in an above ground cemetery, winds through the French Quarter, and even visits the sewers of this home of Voodoo.” The pre-show stage show, which stars Ross, is a pyrotechnic extravaganza... Bring your sun screen!

After what will most likely be a late night on Bourbon Street, the next morning’s adventure will be optional, but worth getting up for. Within walking distance from the hotel are Haunted sites and cemeteries, one of which has the remains of the Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau!

The last Haunt included in the pre-show tour will be The Mortuary. As seen in the Discovery channel special, this year-round Paranormal Research Center, built in a haunted funeral parlor, in the middle of a cemetery, has a Haunted Attraction in the basement. Our host Jeff Borne will be on hand for the tour and let us in on the exciting plans he has for this unbelievable building!

But we are not done Haunting yet! Once back in Houston, attendees can choose to attend the Thursday night Haunt tour of Nightmare on the Bayou. Our host, Bob Wright, will be cooking up a Texas style “Choke and Puke,” for attendees. This dinner and social will include a lights off tour of this large Haunted Attraction in North Houston filled with great actors, great scares and 3D section.

After a full day of HAuNTcon Education and Tradeshow, The Friday Night Haunt Tour will be of Phobia 290. (See Cover Story, this issue!) Three of the five attractions at this multi-element, hard core, animated haunt will feature full actor tours and one additional Haunt will be available for lights on tours and photos.

For those staying over for the new Monday workshops, HAuNTcon will be offering a Bonus Sunday Night Tour and social at the National Museum of Funeral History. This is a great opportunity to discuss the convention, unwind with Haunter friends over a bite to eat and check out the antique hearses, antique coffins and antique embalming equipment in this beautiful museum. Exhibits include a 1900’s casket factory, Civil War embalming and a replica of President Lincoln’s funeral train.

Convention and Exposition
The HAuNTcon Education starts early on Friday April 25 at the Houston Crown Plaza Hotel. The Haunt Ed sessions are divided into four threads; Haunting Business, Creative, Demonstration, and Make-N-Take! Last year was the first time Make-N-Take workshops were offered at HAuNTcon and they were a huge success, selling out early. This year there will be more sessions and the ability to sign up on the web site so we can repeat the popular sessions.

For the first time, HAuNTcon is expanding its already vast Haunter Education with full day paid workshops on Monday April 28. Several companies are offering all day, in-depth hands on sessions including, Bad Boys Scenic Design, Wolf Brothers FX and Face Paint, Smooth-on mold making and Leonard Pickel’s D.O.A. Haunt Design Firm. Sign up for these workshops and the Make-N-Takes at www.hauntcon.com now, because they will sell out!

HAuNTcon attendees will be treated to a huge Tradeshow floor, Friday April 25 through Sunday April 27, filled with exhibitors selling the latest in fright services and equipment for the professional Haunted House owner and the Halloween enthusiast alike. Everything a Haunter needs from horror makeup and highly detailed masks to static props and large animatronic creatures will be for sale, many at wholesale prices.

The Spirit of Halloween
Saturday night April 26, is the massive Costume Ball sponsored by Haunted Attraction Magazine. Show off your most creative costume at this rocking party and celebrate the joy of getting into character for fun rather than work. The ticket price includes music, dancing and cash bar.

Special events on Sunday April 27 include the Hearse and Parade Car Show as the hotel parking lot fills with the largest collection of creepy tricked out vehicles and funeral cars ever exhibited in Texas. Also on Sunday is the exit polling favorite Haunted Garage Sale. At this spooky flea market and swap meet attendees can get into the HAuNTcon selling frenzy by buying a table and bringing their own scary stuff - home made, used or new - to sell to other attendees.

Join Haunters from across the country and around the world at the 5th Annual Haunted Attraction National Tradeshow and Convention in Houston, Texas, and bring your key Haunting crew. With everything you need to make your next Halloween season the best it can be! Designed by Haunters, for Haunters, HAuNTcon is four days and four nights of Haunter Education, Tours of Local Haunted Houses, jam packed Tradeshow Floor, Hearse Show, Haunted Garage Sale and an incredible Costume Ball! It is the best money you can spend on your Haunted Event.

Discount attendee registration and exhibitor applications are available at www.hauntcon.com and HAuNTcon hotel rates are available at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Houston, Texas by phone at 713-748-3221.

Transworld is almost here.

But I am excited. I am excited because we really developed some products that I think will knock your socks off.

However, You will just have to come by our Booth # 8808 at Transworld to see everything. But don't worry. You won't miss us. Just look for the Giant Blood Splat in the sky.

And here is a run down of what you will find, and all items we bring to the show we are selling off the floor. All sold items will be marked "Sold" and we have already sold many of them.

We have added 6 new My Pet Zombies to the product line and we also have the ability to costume these Zombies any way you wish. So you need a Cowboy, Pirate, Butcher, Doctor, Chef, Red Neck, Inmate etc... Anything you want we can do.

You will see and hear the Scream Cube. Our insanely loud Portable actor worn or costume mounted multi track MP3 player system.  The only thing I worry about is the Convention telling us to not activate it. It is over 90 decibles and might bother some of our neighbors.

I am very excited to announce a new product that I have wanted to do for 5 years. The Bunrakboo Puppet Illusions. This allows us to take any one of our My Pet Zombies and turn them into Life size puppets. Used in the dark with the Custom made Black velvet suit. You will completely freak out your patrons. Because they can tell it is a prop and not a person. They will never suspect it is alive. And when you combine this with the impact with the Scream Cube you will have some wetters guaranteed.

Lets not forget about the Weapons of Mass destruction. This is a full line of latex and foam Bone handled hand hammered Hand held Actor Weapons. Say that three times fast, and they are like nothing else on the market.

We have also developed a new Neck Biter called “Bird Biter”. It has a vulture like head with subtle hair work and fleshy looking. It is a fun piece and a good queueline interactive piece.

And of Course we have several costumes we have developed

First of is the Scare "O" Jack. This is a 11' Scarecrow with a Jackolantern Head that turns left and right and has built in lighted eyes. It is perfect in a corn maze or any outdoor event. And it is huge.

Next is the Cathulu. It is 9' tall with a skull and moving tentacles. It should be interested to see how people react to this piece.

Lastly is the Tree Beast. This is a nod to our history. We started in this business building Parade puppets, and this is built the same way. It stands 13' tall and will make a huge impression coming out of the woods. And we have developed Scream Cube sounds exclusively for this system.

You have already heard about our revision of Art for our website and Sounds of Gore CD library. We will have our entire library available for sale at the show along with many promotional items from pens, keychains, Gore Galore t-shirts, and Gore Galore Gas atendant shirts.

Every buyer over $500 will receive a Free T-shirt, or Gas attendant shirt, keychain and pen.

Plus all who come by our booth will Receive a Catalog with DVD for your viewing pleasure.

So, come by our Booth and Getcha Some Gore!
